July 11, 2008 - A resident of Port Coquitlam, DeSantis began with DirectBuy of Greater Vancouver in 2005 as a warehouse helper. His duties have expanded during his tenure to include leading new member orientation tours, order fulfillment and call center support.
“Jimmy came to us from the Polaris Employment Services for special needs individuals. It’s rather remarkable the amount of new tasks he’s taken on since he’s been here and he’s always willing to take on more,” said Peter Ruetz, co-owner of DirectBuy of Greater Vancouver. “Jimmy has a fabulous sense of humor and is very well liked by staff and members. He’s a tremendous asset to our organization and this promotion is the direct byproduct of how hard and how well he works.”
As a result of their work with DeSantis and another employee, Ashley Cohen from the same program, DirectBuy of Greater Vancouver recently received a Certificate of Appreciation from Polaris Employment Services for the Skills Link Project, a government funded commitment to “Grow The Talent.” The “Grow the Talent” initiative encourages British Columbia businesses to look to special needs and challenged individuals as an employment source, with a goal of 10 percent of their workforce being made up of these individuals.
“The ‘Grow the Talent’ initiative is a wonderful effort to tap a previously untapped resource for workers,” said Ruetz. “It’s difficult to think of our operation without Jimmy and Ashley and I know there are plenty of other businesses who could greatly benefit from graduates of programs like the one at Polaris.”
