April 08, 2009 - The special occasion is the Dianetics "Book-a-Thon," a term coined 5 years ago to describe the weekend-long event where Scientologists from the Church of Scientology of New York made it possible for any of the hundreds of thousands who visit this famous intersection each day to get a copy of this self-help classic.
"Now that the Dianetics book is published in 50 languages, virtually anyone can find a copy they can read," said Reverend John Carmichael, President of the Church of Scientology of New York.
Although Dianetics Book-a-Thons are now held by Scientology churches and missions around the world, New York Scientologists point out it all started here, at the "Crossroads of the World."
Over 21 million copies of Dianetics, by L. Ron Hubbard, have been sold since its publication in 1950. "For nearly 6 decades Dianetics has continued to provide workable answers to the problems of life," said Rev. Carmichael, who extends an invitation to any Times Square visitor to tour the Church, located at 227 West 46th Street in New York.
