  • (1888PressRelease) December 09, 2013 - Washington, DC - Dexter Industries announces the release of a project developed with their BrickPi platform for opening up the Kindle Reader. The project, BrickPi Bookreader, uses the LEGO Mindstorms system and the Raspberry Pi to read Kindle Books and digitize the text. The book can be stored to file, or read aloud using text to speech software.

The project was inspired by the Google Books Library Project, which has made a major effort over the past year to digitize 130 million of the world's books in a number of major libraries. In a demonstration video released by the company, the BrickPi Bookreader reads a page of Edgar Allen Poe from a Nexus tablet. The LEGO robotic arm is controlled by the Raspberry Pi and automatically turns the page of the Kindle reader. Using a Raspberry Pi, the image is turned into text, and the page of the book is read out loud.

The company has released all design plans and code for the Bookreader project on their website.

The BrickPi is a device developed by Dexter Industries that brings LEGO robotics to the Raspberry Pi. The Kickstarter project was successfully funded in June of 2013, raising over $125,000 for the project. Dexter Industries completed fulfilment of the BrickPi Kickstarter project in October 2013 and is currently selling the BrickPi through their website and international distributors.

Dexter Industries designs educational devices for the LEGO Mindstorms, Raspberry Pi and Arduino systems. The company produces a wide range of sensors for education and hobbyists. Their products include solar power systems for LEGO robots, a GPS guidance system, WIFI communications for LEGOs, and pressure temperature sensors for the Mindstorms NXT system.
