  • (1888PressRelease) January 17, 2015 - Utah Jazz Forward Derrick Favors will bring powerful influence to Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Intermountain Area. At an announcement on Thursday, January 15, the soft-spoken giant outlined his pledge to raise awareness, garner volunteer support and spearhead fundraising for the Salt Lake-based Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of the Intermountain Area.

"This is such an exciting time for RMHC locally. Between the newly expanded House and two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, the local charity will serve over 10,000 families this year. I am really looking forward to supporting the House and helping them meet their goals. Ronald McDonald House Charities makes such a difference for so many children and their families," says Favors. Favors, who signed with the Utah Jazz in 2011, felt aligning himself with a local charity was important to making Salt Lake City his home.

Ronald McDonald House Charities® of the Intermountain Area (RMHC) provides a temporary home-away-from-home that serves and sustains families of seriously ill or injured children receiving treatment at area hospitals. "Through our two core programs, the Ronald McDonald House® and Ronald McDonald Family Room®, families are able to focus on what matters most - their child," says Carrie Romano, Executive Director, RMHC of the Intermountain Area. "We are so excited to have Derrick Favors help in championing our efforts through visits to RMHC, making meals for families, and our fundraising efforts including McDonald's Fries for Families."

Favors will help raise awareness of the Fries for Families campaign offered by participating McDonald's restaurants in Utah, western Wyoming and eastern Nevada. Participating restaurants donate a portion of the sale from fries sold in their restaurants. In 2014, the local program raised $112,739.40.

After the announcement Favors joined Carrie Romano on a tour of the expanded Ronald McDonald House campus at 935 East South Temple and helped move the first family into the newly renovated original house. In order to better address the needs of families of children in a life-threatening medical situation, RMHC expanded and renovated the "House That Love Built." A new 37,963 square foot building expansion opened to families in April 2014, featuring larger rooms to better accommodate the whole family, along with much needed child-centered spaces and communal spaces for families to gather strength together. In June 2014, renovation began of the 19,645 square foot original building. RMHC will mark the completion of the facility at a grand-opening event February 10. Together, the Ronald McDonald House campus will have 72 guest rooms including 8 long-term suites. The expansion and renovation project is the most significant in the charities 25-year history.
