Designed specifically for artisans, ArtCAM JewelSmith (www.artcamjewelsmith.com) enables jewellers to design and manufacture highly intricate personalised or custom jewellery or new complete lines with ease. Whether master model makers prefer to draw their designs, hand sculpt a 3D model or create the piece in a familiar CAD package their work can be simply scanned or imported directly into the software. Alternatively, designs can be created directly in ArtCAM JewelSmith itself.
Available in a number of European and non-European languages and ring sizes, ArtCAM JewelSmith 2009 can not only be used by companies across the globe but by companies outsourcing their manufacturing overseas.
Engineered for its ease of use, ArtCAM’s structure is similar to artistic packages such as PhotoShop where the jeweller can utilise a number of layers to change elements of their design or form intricate and complex patterns. To create a matching necklace, ring and bracelet, for example, ArtCAM’s ‘Project Tree’ can keep all related models together, for quick reference, accessibility and duplication of required design elements.
To incorporate “green” (lab-grown) or authentic gems into the piece, ArtCAM JewelSmith simply takes the dimensions of both calibrated and un-calibrated gems and creates caps to securely hold them in place, allowing the jeweller to focus their knowledge and skill on developing other design ideas.
For the creation of portrait cameo jewellery in materials such as agate, jewellery designers will benefit from ArtCAM’s ‘Face Wizard’, which rapidly creates a 3D model of a face profile from a photograph.
ArtCAM also provides an array of sculpting tools for other highly sculpted pieces of jewellery. The sculpting tools allow the user to select the areas they wish to shape as well as modify sculpting tool thickness and strength. Any mistakes or unwanted changes can easily be rectified. For hand engravers, ArtCAM can replicate their current working methods by utilizing a Wacom tablet, this way the more pressure applied by the pen to the tablet the more material is taken away.

To create a coin pendant, for example, the user can take their 3D model and tilt / rotate it to give the required perspective, creating the illusion of distance between one area and another. Rather than taking screenshots or sending large cumbersome files that may block your clients’ e-mail accounts, users can simply click on ‘Save 3D View’ for an accurate and small file that can then easily be e-mailed to all parties involved.
Once the design process is complete, ArtCAM JewelSmith’s integrated machining wizards set the machine toolpaths or provide the necessary output files for CNC machining or rapid prototyping of the piece.
