April 02, 2007 - Pissedpoet Pics is proud to present its latest exhibition of digital art entitled Shrines.
Created by Australian artist/photographer Henry Bateman, it is a series of deconstructed photographs of the Easter shrines erected on street corners in the Makati suburb of Poblacion.
For over 50 years the residents of this small inner Philippine city have designed and made folk art structures to celebrate their devotion to their saviour and his death. Easter is the event in the Philippine Christian calendar.
During Easter 2006, Bateman photographed these temporary street shrines and subsequently using his computer software deconstructed the photographs to explore the motivations and relationships of the creators of this art to their God.
Ranging from the enigma of Shrine III through the showmanship of Shrine VI to the underlying vengeance of Shrine IX a varied range of emotional connections is displayed.
“I became fascinated with the Filipino’s celebration of Easter during my third visit to the country,” Bateman said. “Almost over night, the Barangay Poblacion became dotted with these wonderful Folk Art creations and the more I looked at them the more these many relationships between the Filipino and their God came to light,” he added.

He is an Australian artist/photographer who after several visits to the Philippines became a resident in 2005. He has been making art for over 30 years and at the turn of the century, he embraced digital art using photography as his primary image collection device.
