  • (1888PressRelease) July 22, 2014 - Pittsburgh, Pa-Black Opal Books and Pittsburgh resident Susan Dobransky-Sofayov announced that Sofayov's debut novel, Defective, was released in April, 2014. The title is available via Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, All Romance and other retailers and etailers of quality books, including directly through publisher Black Opal Books. The novel depicts a college-age young woman whose life is disrupted by an undiagnosed biological disorder. Review copies are available upon request; email susan.sofayov ( @ ) gmail dot com dot

Defective tells the story of University of Pittsburgh law student Maggie Hovis, who struggles to hold on to her fiancé, her grade point average and her own sanity as she unknowingly struggles with Bipolar II Disorder. It is an honest account of a rocky journey against mental illness, and Maggie's quest to attain the love and achievements her uncooperative brain has always insisted she did not deserve.

"Defective illustrates the reality faced by many people, particularly young women, who may not even be aware their challenges are related to a treatable condition," said Sofayov. "The lives of mentally ill people are not necessarily laced with the drama we see in movies. Ordinary human beings with full lives, loved ones and obligations confront these issues daily. Yet they can find ways to overcome their disabilities and find resolution. If one young person recognizes herself in these pages and seeks help, that is a victory."

"When people are diagnosed with cancer, we bring casseroles. When it's mental illness, everyone turns away. Why?"

Susan Sofayov lives in Mt. Lebanon, PA, and is a former vice president of child care for a large non-profit organization. She holds a BA in English literature and political science from the University of Pittsburgh and an MA in teaching from Chatham University.
