Debt: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You, Say Debt Advisers Direct

Millions turn a blind eye to debt – and put their future at risk

(1888PressRelease) October 13, 2007 - According to recent research by Unbiased.co.uk, over two and a half million people in Britain do not know how much debt they have. It's an alarming figure and perhaps an unexpected one, since so many public figures have already warned of the dangers of debt.

"When millions of people don’t even know how much they owe, there's clearly a need for greater awareness, and that’s an area where we can make a real contribution," say Debt Advisers Direct, who provide a comprehensive range of financial solutions, from debt consolidation loans and debt management programmes to IVAs.

"In fact, we were one of the UK’s first companies to offer free debt advice. In 14 years, we’ve helped hundreds of thousands of people – not just to solve their immediate problems, but to stay out of financial trouble in the future. The right advice can make a huge difference to someone’s long-term financial stability."

Although it’s never too late to seek expert advice, putting it off can make a situation much worse. For example, the Department for Trade and Industry has revealed that the average debt at the start of an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) is now £52,700, more than twice the UK’s average wage.

"The earlier someone tackles their debt, the greater the range of solutions they can choose from," say Debt Advisers Direct. "For many people, IVAs are indeed the best way forward, but others may be better off taking out a debt consolidation loan or joining a debt management programme. There’s also the emotional side – many people spend years living with stress they could have avoided by keeping an eye on their debts and acting on time."

According to Unbiased.co.uk, young adults are particularly lacking in debt awareness, with 41% of today’s 18-24 year-olds unable to say, within £500, how much they owe. "Young adults are facing a future where so much is unpredictable, from house prices to pensions. Taking debt seriously is clearly a key part of preparing for that future," say Debt Advisers Direct.

Part of the Think Money Group, Debt Advisers Direct take great pride in providing first-rate advice and personal, one-to-one service: "As with any form of help or advice, the best kind of financial assistance is the kind that helps people address tomorrow’s problems as well as today’s. Whether they’re looking for advice or a specific solution like a debt consolidation loan, anyone who calls Debt Advisers Direct will get through to an expert who takes the time to discuss their situation and look at the best way to get back on top of their finances – and stay there."
