December 12, 2006 - A few months ago, Janid had been notified by Farandulife Magazine she had been chosen as one of New York’s Top 20 Sexiest Latinos, among other artists including Dominican singer Anais and actress Zoe Saldaña. Farandulife asked Janid and every artist on the Top 20 list to attend a photo shoot with 3 wardrobe changes. Those photos would be used for publicity and for the competition’s voting process. In Janid’s case, Farandulife was also going to use these pictures for an interview which would have been featured in the magazine’s January issue.
Puerto Rican designer Jorge Betancourt gave Janid 3 ensembles and Farandulife agreed to credit the designer in Janid’s interview. Days before the main red carpet event where Janid would be honored and the #1 spot would be revealed, Farandulife contacted the Puerto Rican singer—via email—alleging their computers had a virus and none of Janid’s photos could be recovered. Farandulife magazine’s Director, Xiomara Taveras, claimed “they tried to recover the pictures, and after many failed attempts, they decided not to notify Janid’s management or even her because they were embarrassed, plus they really couldn’t get a hold of her because they thought her name was spelled with a Y and couldn’t find a contact number or email address.” Ms. Taveras then advised Janid to “find some clothes from your own closet, we’ll reshoot the photos and just say they are designed by Jorge Betancourt so he can get his credit.” To top it off, Ms. Taveras said “I don’t know how you’ll feel about this, but the event will still take place and I don’t know if you still want to come.”
Janid informed Dead Ninja Records CEO Stephen “Kaydean” Phillips and manager Lynn Herron of the circumstances and after reviewing the chain of events, incoherent excuses and lack of professionalism from the magazine, photographer and the rest of Farandulife’s staff, they decided to pull Janid from the voting process, main event and even the January interview.
As of today, Farandulife still has not apologized directly to Dead Ninja Records, manager Lynn Herron nor designer Jorge Betancourt using language as a poor excuse, claiming they cannot communicate with anyone in the label because they do not speak English. “Farandulife has wasted our time, they have been extremely disrespectful and their actions and lame excuses are nothing but an insult to our intelligence and integrity. It is unfortunate, but right now Farandulife is giving the Dominican community and the Hispanic media a really bad name,” stated Dead Ninja Records CEO, Kaydean.
Janid’s fans are upset and disappointed with all the circumstances that lead to her removal from New York’s Top 20 Sexiest Latinos, however, they are excited to know she is currently in the studio working on her second album.
