September 01, 2009 - The first da Vinci robot in Mexico has recently begun operating at the hands of an experienced team of urologists from Hospital San Jose TEC, who have performed more than thirty successful robotic prostatectomy surgeries in just these first few months. Dr. Francisco Lopez Verdugo and Dr. Victor Camacho have been trained in these techniques in both the US and Spain and are now ready to serve not only the local population, but are also aiming at the US Uninsured market.
The da Vinci surgical system has further improved surgeons capabilities since its first debut in 2000. Since then, this technological genius has spread to over 1,000 academic and community hospital sites in the US and abroad. The benefits of using the Robotic method during surgery are numerous. It can lead to fewer post-operative complications and infections, as well as a shorter hospital stay and recovery period. When referring to the robotic prostatectomy that his group specializes in, Dr. Camacho mentions that “Our patients have shown great results in terms of effectively removing cancer tissue without loss of urinary and sexual function”. The designers themselves have also stated that by using the da Vinci system, surgeons can expect “superior visualization, enhanced dexterity, and greater precision and ergonomic comfort for the optimal performance of minimally invasive surgery”.
Although there are no disagreements that the da Vinci surgical system is a revolutionary improvement in medical surgical technology, its presence won’t be found within the operating room of every hospital. Its hefty cost (averaging about 1.5 million dollars), and the small number of surgeons trained to use it, still limit its presence to top Hospitals. Nevertheless, US patients now have a very affordable option very close to home, when seeking a da Vinci surgery. “Having such a high tech tool, very close to the border with Texas, and being able to offer robotic surgeries at less than half the US price is a huge advantage that we’re betting on to attract American patients” says Gabriel Senior, General Manager at Travel For Care, a medical travel services firm based in Monterrey.
Dr. Lopez Verdugo and Dr. Camacho make up the robotic urology team at Hospital San José TEC de Monterrey. They perform the da Vinci prostatectomy for an estimated price of $24,700. This is the fastest-growing treatment for prostate cancer, now the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men.
