March 12, 2009 - In this uncertain economy, families are looking to cut any expenses that seem like a luxury or even the slightest bit frivolous. One item receiving scrutiny in many households – and in the media – is gym memberships. Yet a growing body of evidence suggests that cutting that gym membership may be exactly the wrong move for even the most cash-strapped family. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, inactive adults have significantly higher direct medical costs than active adults, and the costs associated with physical inactivity increase with age. In response to the economic challenges facing women today, Curves has implemented plans to assist women in staying healthy and strong when they need it the most, and to increase the value of their gym membership.
Participating Pinellas County Curves will be offering free Weight Management and Nutrition classes to teach its proven method for losing weight and raising metabolism. The fees of $69-$99 previously associated with these classes are no longer being charged. Classes will be offered monthly at each club, including a Start-Up Class for first time participants, Phase 3 Class to teach the last and most important stage of the Weight Management, and a monthly Nutrition Special Topic. Classes will be taught by Curves’ Registered Dietitian, Nadia Rodman, and facilitated by Weight Management Coaches through a series of DVDs that will alternate teaching with interactive hands-on activities.
Since January 2009, Pinellas County Curves have rolled out the red carpet to members of the award-winning Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program, the nation’s leading exercise program designed for older adults. SilverSneakers members are eligible to join Curves at no cost. This program is utilized by several major health insurance and third party providers – including Humana, Wellcare, CarePlus and Freedom medicare supplemental insurance in Pinellas County. If you are not SilverSneakers, other carriers are offering this same benefit and Curves staff will be happy to check eligibility. There are 2.5 million women in the U.S. who are eligible for the SilverSneakers program.
In addition, during the month of March, Pinellas County Curves will participate in the 11th Annual Curves Food Drive to benefit local charities and food banks. Collectively over the past five years, nearly 50 million pounds of food were distributed to local communities all over the world through the Curves Food Drive. Participating Curves will be giving back to the community by waiving their normal service fee for any new member who brings in a bag of non-perishable groceries and joins between March 9th and March 31st. This promotion will help the women of Pinellas County manage their weight and their wallets by saving them dollars, while also helping feed hungry people in the community.
