February 24, 2007 - I am sending you this letter on behalf of all Canadians whose life has been touch by the horror of drug addiction. I believe I have a solution and I believe now is the time to act. The 2010 Winter Olympics sets the perfect stage to highlight the advances of modern medicine. It is in the highest spirit of the Olympics and of the Canadian Nation.
I have information about a drug, which I take for the symptoms of Narcolepsy, which might help in finding a solution to the problem of the crack addicted homeless population.
In my estimation the majority of the homeless in Vancouver have some form of cocaine addiction which is disabling their lives. Unlike Crystal Methamphetamine which is most likely an indicator of a pre-existing condition of either Narcolepsy, AADD, ADHD, Obesity or Depression - a medical problem, and opposed to Heroin Addiction for which there is a Methadone Program available to help them stabilize their lives and maintain a residence, cocaine addicts have no medical procedure in place to help them with the life long feelings of craving and symptoms of withdrawal. This burden associated with the cost of maintaining a cocaine addiction predisposes them to inappropriate money management; neglecting the true costs of living such as shelter, food and medical care. Leaving them homeless, criminalized and vulnerable.
Which unfortunately leaves the rest of us vulnerable. Because these people now live on the same streets we walk on. And they are unhealthy - passing communicable diseases to passerby's such as lung infections. They are unclean - having to urinate and defecate in the same alley ways that our garbage men and city workers and food handlers and odd stray tourist must pass through. They are unreliable - leaving their detritus anywhere and everywhere for anyone to become infected by dirty needles and blood stained filthy articles of personal use. And they have become untrustworthy citizens because they are always in the grips of a physical addiction which they cannot afford.
The answer is simple. We must make an industry out of helping these people. Forget the revolving door policies of the beleaguered Courts and the frustrated efforts of the Vancouver Police Department which have done nothing but create a dystopian urban chaos akin to the days of Sodom and Gomorrah. A lecherous trap waiting in lie to snatch any one of our children into a intentional industry of syndicated criminality.
We must demand the medical community act now and put and end to this epidemic. They have the tools, they have the know-how and they have the responsibility to act appropriately in times of crisis. It is not societies responsibility, it is not the governments responsibility, it is not law enforcements responsibility, it is the doctors responsibility to deal with the infectious disease of addiction and it is the medical communities obligation. We face an epidemic and that is a medical crisis. Or for what else do we place the care of our lives in our doctors hands.
An industry of helping the diseased, not of syndicated criminalization must be established lest we become the diseased and the diseased become our answer. And this is not necessary anymore. There is a medication available to all general physicians to prescribe off label in Canada, which means in any manner a physician sees fit, called Modafinil. It has been tested in clinical trials in the United States and Europe and has been shown to provide a 100 percent success rate in treating cocaine addiction and cocaine addicts. And with an Olympics coming, a showcase of human talent and strength, the pinnacle of human achievement in all facets of life from training to medicine there is simply no excuse.
