July 09, 2007 - With a handful of members, Psoriasis Online Community (PsorPhil) became a convenient medium to vent their anger, frustrations, agonies and aspirations. Today, PsorPhil has become a support group to more than 200 Filipinos with psoriasis.
Psoriasis is a non-contagious but incurable chronic skin disease that entails a debilitating psoriatic arthritis. It is a painful disease characterized by joint erosion and skin lesions. Most people with psoriasis choose to hide and withdraw from society for fear of being ridiculed and disliked by the public. Majority of people with psoriasis finds it very difficult to get a job.
A number of patients go to the extent of taking their own lives because of depression. 125 to 180 million people all over the world are estimated to have psoriasis: 850,000 to 1.7 million Filipinos are believed to be suffering in silence with this disease.
The need to help the poorest members of the psoriasis community will be at the heart of PsorPhil’s second anniversary on August 18, 2007 at the Community Facility of the Bonifacio Global City. LEO Pharma Philippines sponsors this event that will launch the Psoriasis Livelihood Network (PLANET) with the most economically challenged members of the psoriasis community benefiting from this project.
Highly respected doctors from leading hospitals and patients together with their families and friends will convene for a National Psoriasis Conference prior to the launching of PLANET.
