February 09, 2008 - BROOKTONDALE, NY – Film artist John Fracchia is exhibiting three film works and is currently the featured artist at the Saferis Art Gallery in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
Fracchia, a graduate of the Binghamton University Cinema Department, resumed making films in 2007 after a twenty hiatus when he was asked to create a piece for the TEKHNIKOS dance and technology concerts held at Rockland Community College in February of that year. Outside-In (finite), a collaboration with dance educator and technologist Dr. Nancy Kane, resulted and was exhibited over each of the three nights.
Said Fracchia, “When TEKHNIKOS was over, I was excited by working in this medium again and wanted to bring Outside-In(finite) to a wider audience.” He began by posting the work on the popular Internet video site, You Tube. Then, he put announcements in Craigslist. “Craigslist was new to me at the time, but I was intrigued by the potential. I hit all of the areas that I felt had thriving art communities. A short experimental piece isn’t going to garner a million hits, but I felt that I could use technology to at least increase exposure of the work.” It was a good call. The effort resulted in over 1,800 viewings and a surprise: An e-mail from the Saferis Art Gallery in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
“When I received the e-mail from Tony Valladares, the owner of Saferis, about exhibiting the piece, I thought it was a put on.” Fracchia said. “I just hadn’t considered the possibility.” Valladares expressed interest in exhibiting Outside-In(finite) at Saferis and a phone conversation between the two led to an offer of a larger exhibition. Having recently returned to filmmaking, Fracchia set to work on completing two pieces that were in progress, Celestial Somesthesis and Blue Water Falling.
All three pieces are currently available for viewing at the gallery and are being circulated by the Saferis staff for possible inclusion in film festivals. “My experience tells me volumes about the power of technology as a tool for artists to increase and engage their audiences,” Fracchia said. “It’s tremendously exciting.”
