February 24, 2009 - Joan Siefert Rose, president of the Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) (www.cednc.org), a private, nonprofit organization that promotes entrepreneurial efforts in the Triangle region of North Carolina, has announced that CED’s Biotech 2009 conference, held Feb. 16-17 at the Raleigh Convention Center, was the largest in the group’s history, welcoming almost 1,000 attendees.
Monday highlights included N.C. Gov. Beverly Perdue’s opening remarks and a speech by James C. Mullen, president and CEO of Biogen Idec, on biotechnology policy. Other speakers throughout the day included UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorp and James C. Greenwood, president and CEO of Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO). The day’s featured panel session discussed “Biotechnology in the New Administration.”
Tuesday’s events saw opening remarks from Sen. Richard Burr and featured Duke University Chancellor of Health Affairs Victor J. Dzau’s thoughts on the globalization of healthcare. Sen. Kay Hagan and Nobel Laureate Oliver Smithies also served as the featured lunch speakers Tuesday afternoon. The day’s featured panel sessions included “Leadership Issues in Changing Times” and “Financing Trends in Biotechnology.”
CED’s Biotech 2009 was held in partnership with the North Carolina Biotechnology Center and the North Carolina Biosciences Organizations (NCBIO). Biotech 2010 is scheduled to be held Feb. 16-17, 2010 at the Raleigh Convention Center.
