January 25, 2008 - Core Education (www.coreeducation.co.uk), a global leading supplier of ICT solutions to education, is delighted to announce its partnership with Micro Librarian Systems Ltd (MLS, www.microlib.co.uk), the UK’s leading provider of educational library management software. Schools using Core Education’s Learning Gateway, TALMOS, will now benefit from a fully integrated library system consisting of the purpose built Junior Librarian for primary and infant schools and the high end yet user friendly Eclipse/Eclipse.net for secondary schools.
With most schools running Learning Platforms, the focus is on integrating as much content and as many services as possible into the online environment, thereby ensuring that all information can be accessed from one place. As a Learning Gateway, TALMOS offers a complete blend of communications systems and is constantly looking for new ways to offer schools more functionality and integrated products.
The partnership between Core Education and MLS offers schools the ability to access all their library materials and data from TALMOS, reducing the need for multiple systems, multiple data entry and multiple access points. Within TALMOS, students can now search the school library in various ways, choose and reserve books, view media clips of authors talking about their books, write their own book reviews, read other students’ reviews, see what the book of the week is, manage their own account and even be reminded of overdue books or fines outstanding for non returned items!
The benefits of integrating MLS’s library software into TALMOS are also multifold for teachers, librarians and school management staff. Accessing the system through TALMOS means that reports, often requested by Ofsted, can now be generated from a single place and can provide detailed statistics of library usage - from tracking reading progress across gender, age and ethnicity to stock and borrowing patterns between any given dates. Teachers can manage departmental resources such as textbooks, integrate literacy reports into their online lesson plans and have an improved awareness of available resources when planning projects.
In a digital age where internet access and online resources are seen as key tools for motivating pupils, libraries can suffer from an outdated and uninspiring image. By bringing the school library into the heart of TALMOS, students can access and be reminded of these resources online and are therefore much more likely to make the most out of the books available.
Ed Collins, Sales Director at Core Education, commented: “The library software provided by Micro Librarian Systems is a perfect tool for helping schools make the most out of their libraries and we are really excited about its full integration within TALMOS. School libraries are wonderful resources for pupils yet unfortunately they can be underused and even considered ‘uncool’. Having the library at their fingertips through their online environment TALMOS, into which pupils log in constantly from home or at school, will hopefully encourage them to make the most of books – both for personal reading and for school work.
Daniel Tennent, Business Development Director at Micro Librarian Systems, commented: “We are delighted to work in partnership with Core Education. The TALMOS Learning Gateway is the perfect platform for exposing the resources available in libraries and its flexibility will enable us constantly to add more functionality and interactivity into the integrated product. With 2008 being the National Year of Reading, our partnership will hopefully encourage pupils to pick up a book, read it and even move on to rating or discussing it online with their peers.”
