April 06, 2007 - Cookies and cancer. At first glance, most people would not put those two words together. After all, cookies are one of life's greatest pleasures. Cancer, on the other hand, is well, just a terrible disease. However, ironically enough, Susansnaps, the ULTIMATE gourmet gingersnap cookie company would not be here today if it weren't for cancer.
To explain: At the young age of 22, Susan Stachler became a cancer statistic. Unbelievably, Susan's disease came on the heels of her dad's own battle with cancer, as he had just finished chemo. Even worse, Susan is named for her Aunt Sue (whom she was named for) who died in 1977 from the exact same kind of cancer Susan got.
Susan's first thought when she was diagnosed: This has to stop!
Susan's mom, Laura's first thought: This calls for food (ok, so that was not her first thought, but somehow she always seems to know, that no matter what, food makes us all feel better)!
And so, between the two of them, the idea of Susansnaps was born.
At the time, Laura ran Laura's Divine Desserts, which consisted of cakes, cheesecakes, pies, and a few cookies. Through her company, she developed the ultimate gingersnaps. After Susan finished treatment, she worked on logos and packaging for the gingersnaps.
Today, Susan and Laura are excited to announce that their company, which has switched names from Laura's Divine Desserts to Susansnaps, solely bake Susansnaps, the ultimate gingersnaps. Yes, they chose to call them Susansnaps (after Susan and her Aunt Sue) because anyone can offer a plain, old gingersnap. Susansnaps are much more than just a delicious cookie. They have a much deeper meaning. And a much bigger purpose, as a portion of all proceeds are donated to cancer research.
A few years ago, Laura was accompanying her daughter, Susan, to chemo sessions, and the idea of Susansnaps was just a dream. They never imagined they would be selling cookies across the U.S. But here they are! These little cookies have taken over the bakery and are the only item left on the menu!
Fortunately, this duo know longer attend chemo sessions together. Today, they are business partners, working hand in hand in growing their company, raising money for a cure, sharing their story of hope with others, and putting smiles on people's faces.
Susan decided that she would no longer be just another cancer statistic. She would be part of the cure. And today, anyone who purchases Susansnaps can be part of the cure as well.
