February 01, 2007 - Self defense tactics you learned in a local self defense class or even from your martial arts training today won’t even phase some knife-wielding criminal thug intent on taking your wallet, purse, car, or perhaps -- even your life. “Violence today is very different. We recently saw a guy attacked by thugs in England do everything supposedly right. He gave them his wallet, everything they asked for.
Yet they still killed him -- for no apparent reason,” says Tim Larkin, a guy who ought to know. Having rewritten the way the US Special Operations Community learned hand-to-hand combat, Larkin has trained elite members of the military and law enforcement community (US Navy SEAL Teams, US Army Special Forces, US Border Patrol). He’s also trained corporate execs (Ford, Mobil Oil, Sony and others) and 1,000’s of civilians around the world in his controversial self defense system known as Target-Focus Training.
What’s the solution? “Violence is rarely the answer, but when it is (as it often is in a criminal assault), it is the ONLY answer! This means a few self defense moves aren’t going to cut it.
You’ve got to be willing and able to physically hurt the guy yourself. It’s just that no one else is teaching you this,” notes Larkin. “Even martial arts training doesn’t help. There you practice (often for years) how to handle a myriad of different situations. But here’s the deal: violence isn’t about situations. It is totally random. So there’s no way you can practice against all the ways some creep might come at you.
There isn’t enough time and you couldn’t remember them all even if you did.” Larkin’s solution: You must understand a quickly-learned set of self defense principles proven to work for anyone against any type of violence.
He adds, “We spent years studying criminal violence, looking specifically at how a criminal works. To have a chance, you must be able to do to him what he’s willing to do to you. And that’s just something most people have never been taught.” “We add to those foundational principles a simply system for striking available (but never predetermined) targets.
With it someone who isn’t big, fast or athletic and who has only a minimal amount of training can easily make some crack-head sorry he ever chose them as his next victim.” Why is it so easy to learn? Larkin responds, “Initially we had just 40 hours to train a military unit to be fully competent in self defense hand-to-hand killing. That meant moves had to be fast, natural and effective. We’ve since honed the system and now routinely take untrained civilians and give them all the self defense skills they need to handle a violent assault in a 3-day, 20-hour course. And since the movements are natural, you can also get it from DVD.”
