January 21, 2007 - Santa Rosa, CA –December 31, 2006- CompuWiz Computer Service has revealed its annual Top Five list of the strangest and funniest computer mishaps in 2006. This year’s list of bizarre data disasters is even more incredible when you consider that in each case cited, CompuWiz Computer Service actually recovered the data.
“We receive several requests a week for data recovery, so we come across some pretty strange data disasters,” said Edmundo Naranjo, owner of CompuWiz Computer Service. “Although the examples in this year’s list are pretty extreme, they illustrate a very important point-data recovery is possible, even in cases where it seems impossible.
•Wet doesn’t mean gone-A customer left her memory stick in her pocket and put her pants in the laundry pile. Her husband did the laundry without checking the pockets. He found the memory stick on the bottom of the washer, dripping wet! All the data was recovered, including the only complete collection of their baby’s photos from birth to age 5. Divorce averted! This example illustrates that memory sticks should only be uses for data transfer, not data back-up.
•PhD: almost an F- A professor from San Francisco State lost all of the articles he had published through the years, plus a few articles that were in progress. He was working on a desktop computer, and neglected to make back-ups. One day, his Hard Drive failed. He took it to two other computer shops. They were unable to get the data. He decided to give it one last try-good thing-had the data not been recovered, he would have had to piece all of his articles together somehow.
•Laptop abuse- a frustrated writer admitted that she had thrown her laptop out a second story window, because it didn’t work right. Luckily it didn’t hit anyone, but after that, it didn’t work at all. Laptop and owner have been reuinited and now enjoy a peaceful co-existence.
•Drilling for data- A medium-sized company disposed of some Hard Drives by hauling them off to the dumpster, only to find out that one of those Hard Drives wasn’t supposed to be disposed of and had crucial company data. They had to go back and pick through the trash to find it. Stinky! The data was not immediately available due to rough handling.
•What is there to eat in this laptop?- A company was unpleasantly surprised to find that the IRS was auditing their tax return from 4 years ago. Their bookeeping records were stored in an old laptop, in a warehouse. When CompuWiz Computer Service opened the laptop, there were at least 25 dead and decaying cockroaches inside. Yuck!
"Data can be recovered from computers, servers and even memory cards used in digital devices by either working on the computers or media/storage devices in our lab," added Naranjo. "However, individuals and companies can avoid a lot of stress by backing up data on a regular basis and establishing a relationship with a professional data recovery service before disaster strikes."
