March 07, 2007 - The decision itself was made by the City Council on Thursday when it altered the Chandler municipal law so that it prohibits the city from seeking approval for commercial passenger operations from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Although some people have been frustrated by this decision, many businesses and citizens of Chandler are pleased to hear that the expected larger aircraft associated with commercial passenger services will not be flying over their homes and businesses creating noise and air pollution.
Becky Jackson of the Citizens Bond Committee as well as the Chandler Chamber of Commerce – which has recently opened its new online mall at http://chandler.chambercommunity.com – was pleased with this decision, stating that “This should give citizens living around the airport some comfort to know that it will not expand to allow larger aircraft.”Jackson and her committee was among the avid supporters of the limitations made by the City Council, and says that she hopes that the opposition will be reduced to a bond vote on May 15 that is seeking to lengthen the runway to 5,700 feet.
This decision has been applauded as having protected one of Chandler’s largest economic development areas in a circumstance that has long held rural neighborhood opposition. Now, the law helps Chandler and its airport to obtain the longer runway that it needs, without feeling threatened that large jets will be coming in with them. This makes the airport a great deal safer – according to Greg Chenoweth, the airport’s manager – without bringing in these larger aircraft.
This is just another example of how Chandler is always seeking to protect its highly valued quality of life, without hindering its opportunities – both commercial and residential.
