December 19, 2006 - The idea hit him like a blast from a 44 magnum revolver. KILL your spreadsheet!
Like thousands of comic book collectors struggling with organizing their collections, Joe Butler was ready to do in his archaic system. Fortunately for Joe, an owner of a computer company, he knew exactly how to “off” his old, burdensome way of cataloguing his extensive comic collection. And so he decided to develop the one software that could do it all: buy, sell, organize, appraise, and even search by inker, author, title, event and more!
The result is what Butler likes to call the new superhero of comic book collecting: ComicCollectorLive.com! “ I wanted a complete system that the serious collector and the casual collector could use with ease,” says Joe. “ I’ve talked with hundreds of collectors who hated their spreadsheets and also disliked having to sell on ebay or search all over the place trying to find something to complete a collection.” Now with Comic Collector Live everything is done with a simple click of the mouse, and the software is 100% free.
“Even if you found a stack of comic books in an attic or a garage and wondered just what they were worth, you could use this system to appraise them and if need be, sell them to collectors who have posted their wish list. This is so cool that it even notifies you when an issue you’re looking for becomes available,” says Butler.
Comic books have become great investments in recent years. A few years ago a “Marvel Comics” No. 1 dating back to 1939 sold for $210,250! A mint condition “Flash” No.1 from 1940 reeled in $273,125. So who collects this stuff? It appears its not just for kids or geeks anymore. Lawyers, doctors, politicians—even clergymen have carried the hobby begun in childhood into a present day passion with a payoff.
Butler, owner of MidTen Media Inc. near Nashville, Tennessee, expects the launch of comiccollectorlive.com just a few week’s before the New York ComicCon in February. “We have pre-registered thousands already,” says Butler, “ and we look forward to meeting some of our users at the comic con and getting their feedback firsthand.”
