July 04, 2009 - RWE Innogy had invited them to an event for schools entitled "Our Climate." The themes were climate change and the use of renewables, based on the example of Robert Swan's 2041 Antarctic expedition.
RWE Innogy employees Martin Cole and Stuart Quinton-Tulloch had set up two wind micro-turbines on the permanent ice, which now supply a research station with renewable energy. Their work formed part of Project 2041, the brainchild of climate conservationist Robert Swan. Back in Essen, the pair now shared their exciting trip by means of fascinating tales of their experiences and impressive images sure to inspire their audience who will carry climate protection forward in future.
"Great, fascinating and authentic. For my pupils, the event was a successful conclusion to our curriculum series about ecology," explained Dimo Rischke, from Maria-Wächtler-Gymnasium, a grammar school in Essen. "My pupils, especially, and I were delighted to be able to discuss directly with a power generating company about this subject."
Apart from the Antarctic expedition itself, the main focus was on questions such as "what can each individual do to preserve the climate?" and "what roles do renewables play in the climate debate?" The students showed keen interest, especially in the closing discussion, and impressed the experts from RWE with their commitment.
"It's great to see young people so interested in protecting the climate and engaging critically with their environment," reported Cole after the event. "We are delighted that the subject was so well received by the students," added Quinton-Tulloch.
This is the second time that RWE has supported Project 2041, launched by climate conservationist Robert Swan. The purpose of the initiative is to generate awareness of the protection of Antarctica and of the climate. RWE is also aware of the responsibility to preserve our environment and wishes to emphasise this by its support for 2041.
As an energy supplier, RWE invests at least EUR 1 billion per year in the expansion of renewable energy sources, through its subsidiary RWE Innogy. RWE is also showing the energy to lead in the intelligent use of energy, with new storage technology and a raft of innovations.
