October 20, 2007 - Anthony, who goes by the Internet screen name ‘Sntjohnny’ has been involved in Christian apologetics for more than a decade. Over the last few years he has become more and more convinced that people are leaving the faith because the church itself is failing to adequately equip people with even the basics. The bulletin series is an answer to that concern.
Horvath explains, “My own atheism was a direct result of my ignorance. Keep in mind, I had twelve years of Christian day school and high school, and I still wasn’t equipped. I didn’t know about nifty things like Hezekiah’s tunnel and other discoveries that helped me see that there was historical corroboration for my faith. I didn’t know how the Bible was formed and compiled. What I want to do is spare people from this experience. I want them to know the things that I didn’t know.”
The church bulletin insert series goes beyond linking evidences for the Christian faith with that day’s texts. A Biblical language insight is provided to help flesh out people’s understandings of a passage. Also, if a church father like Augustine has spoken about one of that week’s text, it will be included in the bulletin, too.
Horvath argues, “I think one thing we can do besides simply laying out evidences is show that our questions and concerns are rarely new. Christians have struggled with our generation’s issues for centuries and often have produced answers.”
Sntjohnny concludes, “If a person is going to leave the faith, I want them to at least have the very best reasons for doing so. I think it is the job of the church to make sure that its members have the very best information so that people can make the most informed decisions they can. I think that at this point, the church is failing to do that. I hope my church bulletin series can help change that.”
