Child Abuse Prevention Services Receives Grant To Support What’s Up? Girl Talk—a Bully Prevention Program For Adolescent Girls On Long Island

Long Island Fund For Women & Girls grant supports program developed to reduce the incidence of relational and physical aggression, bullying and harassment among 7th grade girls.

New York, NY (1888PressRelease) January 15, 2008 - Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS) is pleased to announce that it was selected as a grant recipient by the Long Island Fund For Women & Girls. The grant specifically supports one of CAPS’ prevention-through-education programs, What’s Up? Girl Talk TM.

“Our recently-conducted LI Middle School Bullying Survey showed that girls, now, are catching up to boys in terms of the escalation of physical violence. So programs like What’s Up? Girl Talk, which helps middle school girls overcome the stereotypes of ‘mean girls,’ are more in demand than ever by schools to address the issue,” said Alane Fagin, Executive Director. “We are so grateful to Long Island Fund For Women & Girls for recognizing the importance of reaching these adolescents and for their generous gift of support.”

What’s Up? Girl Talk consists of facilitated discussion and activities led by a professionally-trained CAPS volunteer. The one-hour bully prevention program targets 7th grade girls and teaches them how to develop skills of open and honest communication. It is one of many prevention-through-education programs for school-age children, developed and offered by CAPS at no cost to Long Island schools.

The Roslyn-based Child Abuse Prevention Services, founded in 1982, is Long Island’s comprehensive resource center for the prevention of child abuse, bullying and peer harassment. It is a non-profit organization underwritten by private donations, grants and legislative appropriations. Information about programs, educational materials and volunteer opportunities are available at www.capsli.org or by calling 516-621-0552.
