Better yet, when philanthropy meets social networking and invites all women to the party you get Chicks with Checks, the 21st century version of community involvement, according to Anne Newell of Charleston, SC.
Newell has long believed that women's networks are at the root of much community advancement. She also believed there should be a fun, systematic, repeatable way for women of all ages and interests to support the organizations that were already on the front lines of their communities and to meet like-minded women. Though Newell had not heard the terms “social networking” or “giving circle” when she started, she quickly realized that Chicks with Checks combined the best of both in a fresh new way.
Founded in 2006, Chicks with Checks chapters host monthly Parties with a Purpose that each feature and benefit a different local non-profit. During a relaxed social time, the Chicks mingle with staff and volunteers from the charity to learn what they do and what resources and support they need. The non-profit also receives a direct donation and is the subject of a mini awareness campaign. “Our mission is to raise awareness and funds while building relationships with these important organizations and each other,” states Newell.
To support the growing network of local chapters, Chicks with Checks has launched the first phase of a virtual community to help supporters across the country connect with each other. Members and corporate partners are able to join, network, advertise, communicate, and donate online. In addition, prospective beneficiaries as well as women interested in starting a local chapter can apply. The affordable Chicks membership includes both club dues and a donation to the charities being featured in your chapter area. “Even if you can’t attend the parties, your Chicks membership combined with the donations of guests and the support of our growing family of corporate partners provides a gift of discretionary funds to help sustain their programs and services,” says Newell. “Chicks with Checks brings together two of today’s strongest trends, social networking and giving circles, to help us put fun into fundraising.”
