(1888PressRelease) August 01, 2007 - A leading nursing journal has praised the website of Action for Tinnitus Research (ATR) for providing “practical” and “powerful” information, valuable for the medical profession, tinnitus sufferers and the public. The website www.tinnitus-research.co.uk was described in the July 2007 edition of Nursing Journal as “packed with information about noise, including the damage it can cause”.

The article commends the charity for the wealth of information available on its website, recommending it to nurses who “advise the public, worry about working or living conditions, or would like to help patients to cope with tinnitus”.

The Nursing Standard suggests that the information sheets available on the website could be printed and displayed in clinics or working environments. It also mentions the usefulness of the patient stories and personal experiences in demonstrating the debilitating nature of tinnitus, as well as the downloadable newsletters Cheerful Earful.

As the article points out, from February 2007 the noise limit for offices was set at 80 decibels, down by five decibels. Prolonged exposure to anything above that level causes hearing damage. Noise at 140 decibels or more leads to immediate harm. The ATR website provides information on various sounds and their decibel levels.

The article adds that “the information is practical, powerful and sufficiently scary, without ever really needing to scream”. For more information on Action for Tinnitus Research, log on to the website at
