Charity Cycle Challenge Gets Tracking With Trimble MRM

Trimble Mobile Resource Management (“Trimble MRM”) has joined up with this year’s Square to Square Charity Cycle Challenge (“SQ2SQ 2008”) in which a group of firefighters are riding from St Thomas’ Square, Newport, Isle of Wight to St Peter’s Square, Vatican City, Italy.

(1888PressRelease) October 28, 2008 - The global leader in GPS vehicle tracking solutions has fitted out the team’s support vehicles with its state of the art technology to ensure that the ten cyclists can remain in constant contact with friends, family and supporters back home throughout their 1,400 mile ride.

Trimble MRM’s easy to use TrimWeb solution is enabling the charity’s supporters to log on to the internet and get real time updates of where the team has got to and see a playback of the route they take through France, over the Alps and into Italy. Thousands of school children from the Isle of Wight are also showing a keen interest in the riders’ progress as they take part in their own mini-SQ2SQ 2008 challenges, cycling 1, 14, 140 or even, for elite high school athletes, 1,400 miles!

Meanwhile, the cyclists themselves are fully “connected” via Trimble MRM’s GeoManager product. Among other benefits, GeoManager, Trimble’s top level tracking solution, comes fully-kitted out with a Wi-Fi hotspot allowing secure internet access and enabling 3G connectivity so that the team can send and receive messages, emails and pictures quickly while out on the road.

Kelvin Wright, Watch Manager from Newport Fire Station who is cycling in the challenge said: “We would like to offer our sincere thanks to Trimble MRM for their time and generosity in helping the team with the challenge and providing such a simple and easy solution for us all to use. It is fantastic to be able to keep all our supporters fully informed of where we’ve got to and we hope it will inspire the children back home to keep cycling in their own mini-SQ2SQ events.”

Andrew Yeoman, Managing Director of Trimble MRM in EMEA, added: “Trimble MRM is delighted to be involved in SQ2SQ 2008 and couldn’t be more happy to provide them with our TrimWeb product to help them track their journey and are thrilled that our European maps are being used for such a good cause. We wish the team the best of luck in their cycle and are logging on and to keep a close eye on where they’ve got to!”

About the Square to Square Cycle Charity Challenge
The Square to Square Cycle Charity Challenge consists of a group of firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service who arrange and hope to complete cycling challenges from various town/city squares to other town/city squares abroad. On 30 August 2008, a team of firefighters will depart from St Thomas' Square, Newport, Isle of Wight with the aim of cycling to St Peter's Square, Vatican City, Italy. Each cyclist will need to cycle around 100 miles per day to cover the 1,454 miles over the 14 day challenge. The target is to raise at least £60,000 for the Wessex Cancer Trust for the diagnosis, treatment and care of Isle of Wight cancer patients and their families by providing a thorascope and other equipment for cancer and leukaemia patients at St Mary's Hospital, Newport, Isle of Wight. In 2005 a team cycled 1,004 miles (each cyclist completing 1,004 miles) from St Thomas' Square, Newport, Isle of Wight to The Old Town Square, Prague, Czech Republic during the 14 day challenge. The team raised £10,000 for Macmillan Cancer, Isle of Wight Kidney Patients Association and the National Fire Services Benevolent Fund.
