  • Miami, FL (1888PressRelease) January 07, 2015 - On January 1, 2015, the non-profit organization officially changed its name from the Women's Breast Health Initiative, Florida Affiliate to the Women's Breast & Heart Initiative, Florida Affiliate. The mission of the organization has formerly included heart disease prevention and early detection.

Mission Statement: The Women's Breast & Heart Initiative saves lives by connecting at risk women with the early detection necessary to fight breast cancer and heart disease.

In 2013, heart disease was integrated into WBHI's impactful intervention because in America, heart disease is the leading cause of death in American women with an estimated 420,000 women who die each year as a result of heart disease. 90% of women have one or more risk factors for heart disease and most are unaware that their life may be at- risk. Armed with the right education, prevention tactics and care, heart disease can be prevented or treated early: which saves lives.

Both breast and heart screenings will be provided through WBHI's nationally recognized door-to-door outreach program starting in February. In West Palm Beach and the City of Hialeah, during outreach months, cholesterol and hypertension screenings will be offered to women, who will also have the opportunity to participate in a physical activity and a nutritional session. Upon completion of the screenings and sessions, participating women receive a bag of fresh fruit and vegetables along with a healthy eating guide. After the screening, WBHI's program director will refer women with abnormal readings to collaborating medical partners for a prescribed follow up.

The change in the organization stems from the personal story of Andrea Ivory, the Women's Breast &Heart Initiative's CEO. A breast cancer survivor, Andrea's firsthand experience with dealing with disease leads her on a journey to help other women and particular at risk, uninsured and underserved women in South Florida.

"Breast cancer and heart disease share many of the same risk factors, which many women either are not aware of or are not addressed properly. When detected early, heart disease, like breast cancer, is treatable and beatable."
