Cerego Announces Support For Content Creation Across 188 Languages Through Its iKnow! Social Learning Platform

iKnow! Users Can Create Learning Content Across Any Language Using Advanced Text-to-Speech technology, Google’s Language API, and New Collaborative Tools.

(1888PressRelease) November 25, 2008 - TOKYO -- Cerego today announced the release of content creation tools that empower users of its iKnow! social learning platform to learn and remember any language. iKnow! users can now create learning modules in 188 languages for study within iKnow!’s community-powered suite of learning applications, which help users learn faster, remember longer, and collaborate on the creation of content.

New social tools allow iKnow! users to add sample sentences, translations, audio, and images to these items. Other community members can correct, flag, and discuss these items, and add them to their own study lists for true collaborative learning.

Combining cognitive science and neuroscience with the social nature of the web, iKnow! lets users remix the web for the purpose of learning. Unlike other social networks, where networking itself is the goal, the iKnow! platform is a collaborative network that lets learners all over the globe leverage and remix content produced by the community.

“iKnow! is different not only because it recognizes that learning is an inherently social process, but also because it incorporates the hard science of how the brain learns best,” said Professor Jan Plass, director of the Consortium for Research & Evaluation of Advanced Technologies in Education (CREATE) and Co-Director of the Institute for Games for Learning at New York University. “Because iKnow! generates personalized learning schedules, each individual’s learning experience is tailored in the optimal way to achieve mastery of the target vocabulary – regardless of his or her native language. There is literally no language combination that can’t be learned through iKnow!.”

iKnow! also has integrated text-to-speech technology from Acapela Group for multiple languages – including, English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic, German, Italian, Swedish, Dutch, Belgian, Finnish, Danish, and Norwegian -- to automatically generate audio for all created items and sentences. When users add learning items, iKnow! not only searches its growing item bank to suggest matches, but also uses Google’s Language API to suggest possible definitions.

“This is a major step in our vision to create the first global social learning platform, one that allows people to share what they know, and learn what they want to know.” said Andrew Smith Lewis, founder and chairman of Cerego. “As the largest online English Language Learning site in Japan, now open to the rest of the world, we look forward to empowering users across multiple languages to come together and create the best content available anywhere.”

There are currently 340,000 registered iKnow! users, who have spent over 16 million minutes in the applications mastering over 20 million items since in just the last 30 days.

Cerego was among a select group of companies invited to launch at DEMOfall 08, where iKnow! was awarded the coveted DEMOgod Award.
