Center For Pain Management Announces New Acute Pain Service

Launched In Conjunction with Pain Awareness Month, New Offering Aims to Provide Rapid Access to Comprehensive Care for Acute Back and Neck Pain.

Indianapolis, IN (1888PressRelease) September 03, 2008 - The Center for Pain Management, one of Central Indiana's most experienced medical practices focused on treating patients with back, head, neck, joint or cancer-related pain, announced today the launch of a new service designed to provide rapid diagnosis and treatment for people suffering from acute pain.

Since 1992, the Center’s board-certified pain physicians have been treating patients with chronic pain, including conditions such as herniated discs, spinal arthritis and continued pain following spine surgery. With this new acute pain offering, adults experiencing the sudden onset of back or neck pain can secure an appointment with one of the Center’s pain specialists within 48 hours. Appropriate patients for this program have experienced back or neck pain for less than one month.

“Acute conditions come on suddenly and can last a few days to a few weeks,” stated Ed Kowlowitz, M.D., board-certified pain physician and owner and medical director of the Center for Pain Management. “Most adults experience pain that impacts their day-to-day functioning at some point in their lives. So many of us work throughout the week and then pack unrealistic amounts of physical activity — like yard work, home improvement projects or fitness activities — into our weekends. This is bound to take its toll on the human body sooner or later.”

During September, which is National Pain Awareness Month, the Center’s physicians have planned several initiatives to inform the Central Indiana community about acute and chronic pain prevention and symptoms. Most importantly, however, with this new on-going acute care service, they hope to encourage adults to seek treatment from a qualified physician before their pain becomes a chronic condition.

“Patients often will seek treatment through their primary care physician, an urgent care clinic or the emergency room,” stated Kowlowitz. “Seeking care at a facility that specializes in the treatment of spinal pain often results in faster diagnosis, treatment and return to work or activities.”

Through its new acute care program, the Center is offering rapid access to treatment by a physician with special qualifications in pain management. At the patient’s appointment, one of the Center’s three board-certified physicians will provide consultation and diagnosis and then recommend an appropriate treatment plan. This may include physical therapy, imaging or interventional procedures such as local injections or nerve blocks — all with the goal of returning the patient to function as quickly as possible.

To be seen by one of the Center’s physicians, prospective patients should not have been experiencing pain for more than one month. The prescription of narcotic pain medicine requires extensive review of previous treatment and past medical and social history. For this reason, narcotics will not be prescribed at these acute care appointments. For an appointment, call the Center at 317-706-7246.
