December 16, 2008 - The iconic Australian sportswoman said she was delighted to be the ambassador for the event, urging Western Australians to take up the challenge and join her on race day, Sunday, 31 August 2008.
Set to demonstrate her prowess in the Channel Nine 12km Run, Freeman’s message to the community was clear – “Join me as I put on my running shoes and take part in this fantastic event.”
The 34th annual HBF Activ City to Surf hopes to attract more than 35,000 participants across a variety of events, who will raise money for Activ to assist people with disability.
The HBF Activ City to Surf is not just for elite athletes and has an event to suit people of all levels of fitness, including the BankWest Half Marathon, the Channel Nine 12km Run, the 12km Walk, the 11km Wheelchair event and the 4km walk/run.
All participants will be timed, maintaining HBF Activ City to Surf’s status as the largest officially timed event in the southern hemisphere.
For the first time ever, HBF’s 950,000 members will be encouraged to participate with the offer of a 15 per cent discount off the entry fee to all events.
HBF Managing Director Rob Bransby said HBF recognised the need to encourage far greater levels of physical activity in the community, which is why the discount was organised for HBF members.
“A recent HBF study found that two thirds of adults in the Perth metropolitan area believe they need to do more physical exercise,” he said.
“And nearly half of those people felt that their physical exercise had decreased over the past five years.
“The HBF Activ City to Surf provides the perfect opportunity and incentive for people to start doing more physical exercise by both preparing and participating in the event.”
Registrations are now open and this year’s participants are urged to create their own fundraising page online and encourage family and friends to sponsor them to raise money for Activ.
All fundraisers will be part of the Activ Dragonfly Challenge, which is open to individuals or corporate teams participating in any of the HBF Activ City to Surf events. A prestigious Cup will be awarded to the top fundraisers in each category.
