Cassandra Hollis Film About Underground Railroad To Screen At Fests In Newark And Los Angeles

“Mattie, Johnny and Smooth White Stones: Parts I & II,” are official programs of the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. They will screen at the CFMi Festival in LA in June 2007 and the Newark Black Film Festival in Newark, NJ in July 2007.

The independently produced film series about an enslaved couple’s escape on the Underground Railroad continues on the film festival circuit around the country. On Saturday, June 23, “Mattie, Johnny and Smooth White Stones: Parts I & II” will screen at the Fifth Annual Christian film/television Market International (CfMi )Screening Tour presented by ICONS TV, in Los Angeles, CA. And, on July 16 – 20, “Mattie, Johnny and Smooth White Stones” will screen at the 33rd Annual Newark Black Film Festival, in Newark, New Jersey.

Produced by Holy Hill Productions, “Mattie, Johnny and Smooth White Stones: Parts I & II” is the saga of a slave couple whose desire to be together is as strong as their desire to be free. Both films were selected for inclusion in the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program and are in national distribution to schools, libraries and museums.

Award-winning filmmaker Cassandra Hollis, wrote, produced, directed and stars in Parts I and II. "It is significant and always timely to be reminded of this aspect of American history. We’re honored to be invited to screen at the CfMi and Newark film festivals," she said.

The Fifth Annual CfMi celebrates five years of screening animation, educational, music videos, shorts and feature films from independent studios, filmmakers, and artists. This years’ event will feature new as well as encore screenings of select films, including “Mattie, Johnny and Smooth White Stones (Part I),” which premiered at CFMi in 2004.

The Newark Black Film Festival celebrates its thirty-third year of showcasing films that focus on both the contemporary and historical African American experience. The festival takes place over five weeks and provides filmmakers, writers, directors and producers a high profile venue for their work.

The Newark Black Film Festival opens at The Newark Museum on Wednesday, June 27, at 7 pm and runs weekly in Newark through August 1.

Mattie, Johnny and Smooth White Stones (Part I)” will screen on the following dates and locations during the Newark Film Festival: July 16, 10:30 am

NEWARK PUBLIC LIBRARY, NEWARK; July 18, 1 pm THE NEWARK

MUSEUM, NEWARK; July 19, 1 pm NJ STATE MUSEUM, TRENTON; and July 20, 10 am, THE BARONET THEATRE, ASBURY PARK.

CFMi will take place at Academy Cathedral Hall, 3208 West 85th Street Inglewood, California. Holy Hill is currently completing “Mattie Johnny and Smooth White Stones: Part III” which will premiere in Canada later this year.
