Cartee-Berry Wins Grand Prize in SDS/2 Solid Steel Competition

Cartee-Berry & Associates is proud to announce that it has won a grand prize in the commercial category of the 2009 Design Data SDS/2 Solid Steel Competition. The company received the award for its steel detailing work on the Cyber Innovation Center, a state-of-the art research park located in Bossier City, LA. Wylie Steel, located in Brentwood, TN, is the fabricator on the project.

(1888PressRelease) October 09, 2009 - Florence, SC - The award will be presented at the 2009 SDS/2 Users Group Conference, which will be held at the Embassy Suites in Lincoln, NE, on October 1 and October 2. Company principals Hal Cartee and Rudy Berry will be attending the conference and will make a presentation about the winning project and their novel use of the SDS/2 software.

“We are extremely honored to be this year’s selection as winner in the commercial category,” Hal Cartee says. “Since we began the company in 2001, we’ve dedicated ourselves to excellence and innovation, and this award recognizes the hard work of everyone on the team. Not only that, we’ve been a long-time user of the SDS/2 software and have attended the Users Group conference for eight years. To return this year as a grand prize winner is a big, big deal for all of us.”

Rudy Berry agrees. “Hal and I are very fortunate to be surrounded with the outstanding group that we have. We are also thankful for the support and dedication of the Design Data team. Their SDS/2 software sets the standard in steel detailing and has been a foundation for the success of our company.”

The 2009 Solid Steel Competition recognized innovative, challenging projects detailed using SDS/2. New buildings, major retrofits or expansion projects were eligible, but they had to be created within the last three years using SDS/2 Version 7.0 or newer.

“The Cyber Innovation Center is focused on the next generation of cyber-defense,” Cartee explains, “so everything about the facility had to represent the cutting edge of design and construction. Using SDS/2, we were able to include several key innovations to make the structure look and function in unique ways. At the end of the project, we provided structural and miscellaneous steel shop drawings for approximately 1,225 tons of steel.”

According to Berry, the fact that he and Cartee are registered professional engineers also made a difference. “Having great software is critical, but knowing how to use it effectively is even more important. As registered professional engineers, we can create innovative designs without sacrificing quality and safety. Very few detailing firms are owned by engineers, so this is a key distinction for us.”
