Can You, The Shutterbug, Become The Next El Greco?

Can you see the difference between a 21st century famous artist's photographic print portrait and, say, the “Portrait of An Old Man” by El Greco? Yes, they are a photograph and a painting made by famous people living in different centuries. Which one is a keeper for you?

Go the old masters style!

(1888PressRelease) December 23, 2007 - Grand Rapids, Michigan -- The old masters used to use paints and canvas to make their masterpieces, and today their paintings are worth a mint. Nowadays the overwhelming majority of people will have a photograph taken rather than having a painter make a stunning portrait for them. The reason why they do it is simple: photographs are easier to make, in most cases they reflect reality quite precisely and they are relatively inexpensive.

In the era of digital photography, however, simple print finishes do seem to steal a part of an image's soul. Although the picture itself may be captivating, those finishes make it look rather flat and mediocre. They fit well in family albums, yearbooks, and product catalogs. Is this the kind of artwork that our children will wish to sell for thousands of dollars in the centuries to come?

What about fine art then? Can only painters become the next El Grecos? Are photographers doomed for failure right from the start?

There seems to be a light in the tunnel, though. We live in the 21st century. How about take it to the next level: combine the classic techniques with modern solutions? Here is the excellent, state-of-the-art photographic invention: let us take the fine canvas substrate, print the image from the computer right onto the canvas so that it resembles an oil painting, wrap it around a thick wooden stretcher frame, attach some good hooks to it, and here we go! The outcome is more than we could wish for: the modern 'oil' photographic 'painting' that has this old feel to it!

This marvelous technique has been used at Alina Cardiae Photography with great success – the canvases are made for them on demand by professional labs in the US. Afterwards, the artist, Alina Cardiae, signs and numbers the images since they come as limited print reproductions.

Alina Cardiae Photography wishes to share this joy with others who can now also proudly adorn their walls with the finely produced portraits. Go the old masters style!
