June 11, 2007 - Durban, Kwa Zulu Natal, Corruption, Theft, Fraud and Poor Productivity has become a company’s and even a governments worst enemy in today’s competitive economic climate. This is a worldwide trend and is rapidly becoming worse. This trend needs to be reversed immediately in order to prevent total collapse of both governments, and critical manufacturers and service providers.
Departmental managers, and key government officials must carry the blame. This is due to the fact that operational persons (who are untrained) either put controls together, or, are responsible for the abuse of the very controls they maintain.
It is common knowledge that should an organization not make a profit, that company will be forced to close it’s doors. This is largely due to poor management, internal theft or fraud and lack of monitoring or follows up in critical areas of the operation. Should a government have a situation where by monies are being misappropriated, and or departments are not being controlled effectively, a different scenario comes into effect. Taxes are increased to cover shortfalls, which in turn affect the economy of the country negatively.
In the corporate world, companies budget a certain percentage to cover loss. All this does is place some members of management in a situation where by they say, “we are at an acceptable level of loss, and fall in line with our budget” Due to this mentality, nothing more is done to correct the situation.. In today’s competitive market there is no room for this type of thinking, and the scrutiny of business controls needs to be of paramount importance.
Knowledge is power, and the more that is known about a subject, in this case “business controls” the more successful a business or government will operate. If we give the correct training and tools to our staff, they will be equipped to carry out their activities more effectively. There are many methods to achieve this goal; you just need the right one.
