May 07, 2008 - Burma’s five regions, Irrawaddy Division, Rangoon Division, Pegu Division, Mon State and Karen State, have been brought under a 'state of emergency' due to the cyclone Nargis smashed onto Burma since 2 May 2008.
Irrawaddy Division has affected very severely due to the tropical cyclone hit the Irrawaddy Delta from the Bay of Bengal, blasting with very strong and gusty winds topping out above 112 knots.
A Nargis cyclone packing 120-150 mile per hour winds ripped through Rangoon for more than 10 hours since Friday midnight (2nd May) until Saturday noon (3rd May 2008). The telephone lines, electricity and internet connection are cut, uprooting trees, the roofs torn off, flooding in a lot of areas and communication lines are disrupted.
According to the latest information, more than 22,000 confirmed dead and likely to increase the number of dead tolls and more than 100,000 people lost their shelters.
Currently, the victims of cyclone Nargis are taking refuge in temporary accommodation but they are facing the shortage of clean water, food and lack of medical care. Aftermath of the cyclone will be water born diseases like diarrhoea, typhoid, dengue fever and malaria etc. The victims of the cyclone Nargis urgently need shelter and the basic commodities like rice, oil and salt etc.
"This is time to put aside our differences for the sake of our people, for the sake of victims of cyclone Nargis, for the sake of people who lost their loved ones" said Myo Thein, director of Burma Democratic Concern from United Kingdom.
"Military government should use this window of opportunity to settle our political problems and work with the opposition to rebuild the country" said Kyaw Lin Oo, director of Burma Democratic Concern from Thailand.

The assistance should be given in the matter of urgency; military government should solve the problem wisely and sensibly. Burma is in the midst of social, economical, political crises and natural disaster.
Burma Democratic Concern appeals International Community to aid the victims of Cyclone Nargis of Burma and call for the Burmese Government to co-operate fully with the aid agencies.
