November 27, 2008 - BUFFALO - The city of Buffalo, MN will be hosting its December occasional sale from Thursday December 4 through Sunday December 7. For those unfamiliar with this frenzied event, the specialty and antique retail shops in Buffalo band together to feature antiques, vintage goods, baked goods, candles and other unique gifts for an exciting weekend of bargain shopping. Known for its diverse range of antique shops and quaint nostalgic atmosphere, Buffalo MN is a natural place to popularize the occasional sale in America and has visitors across the country and world to experience this weekend phenomenon.
With the economic climate being so grim, its popularity has been growing in spades. "We see newlyweds and thrift shoppers from all over, visiting our town for these sales", says Patty Burley, an occasional sale vendor. "Low prices may be one reason for the visit, having people return to the local neighborhood shops and curiously perusing through one-of-a-kind merchandise, it's as heart-warming as chicken noodle soup", Burley says with a smile. Another reason for its popularity may be the rising tide of the green movement, which promotes the re-use of materials.
Approximately 10 shops are dedicated for the once-a-month occasional sales event, but there are 25 other shops in Buffalo that play an active role in its success. Among those is a specialty furniture & furnishings store called Yesterday's Charm. It will be open for the December occasional sale Wednesday December 3 through Sunday December 7, and open for a post-Christmas occasional sale Wednesday December 31 through Sunday December 4. Unlike the dedicated occasional sale stores, Yesterday's Charm is open every week throughout the entire year from Thursdays to Saturdays 9am to 5pm.
It offers brand new merchandise in addition to antique and vintage items. Marge Schumacher, owner of Yesterday's Charm, has 13 "co-partners" who set up boutique shops within the 2400 square foot store, offering their own unique collection of merchandise. "Our shoppers love that they can purchase a new contemporary high end piece of furniture at wholesale prices and a few feet away find a great vintage accessory", Schumacher says. "We also offer custom upholstery, estate sale and interior design services. We strive to be the one-stop shop for home furnishings and decor at bargain hunt prices".
