September 12, 2006 - Today, we’d like to introduce Brothers Raising Our Sons (BROS), a non-profit organization providing fatherless boys with mentoring, leadership training, male guidance, life skills, college preparation, and scholarships. Visit our new website at: www.BrothersRaisingOurSons.org.
The issue being addressed is the cultural state of emergency our country is in. Biological fathers are absent from ½ of all white households, and ¾ of all Black households. Studies show that boys have much greater difficulty with life issues than girls, in general. Fatherless boys struggle the most. As a result, many of these boys make poor choices and become involved with counterproductive activities such as crime/violence.
At BROS, our mission is to uplift communities, strengthen families, and restore lives by: 1. Empowering fatherless boys with guidance and fatherly direction; 2. Teaching good character, integrity, respect, and responsibility; 3. Steering boys away from trouble, toward good citizenship; 4. Providing constructive programs and support services; and 5. Helping boys excel academically and attend college.
We serve male children ages 5-18 years old, with single mothers usually 25-44 years old. Though the organization is located in Atlanta, GA, its program has national relevance. With proper funding, BROS will expand service in every city with a high population of single mothers raising boys.
In our program, each boy is paired with a father figure mentor who becomes one of his many positive role models at Brothers Raising Our Sons. Mentors conduct guidance sessions. Mentees are able to discuss issues that may be weighing heavily upon them. Sometimes mentees just need dedicated time for quality male bonding and interaction. Either way, boys immensely appreciate the constructive attention. BROS mentors are family men, specifically identified by the organization to be upstanding, moral leaders who are also positive role models. Mentors share personal responsibility for the future success of children he counsels.
Starting January 27, 2007, Brothers Raising Our Sons and the Atlanta Public Library will partner to present the Father Figure Mentoring and Leadership Summit for Boys - a monthly series. Seats are limited to first 300.
Presently we are looking for program grants, event sponsorship, and additional mentors and volunteers.
