April 08, 2008 - Birmingham, AL —The Progressive Farmer magazine and the University of Kentucky announce the release of the Wild Quail Habitat Management Course, the first CD of the Wildlife Stewardship Institute CD Series. The training series was created to move private landowners from simply putting out a food plot to actually managing habitat for various wildlife species like quail, deer, pheasants, ducks, doves and even backyard wildlife. “Growing up there were plenty of quail on my farm. But, I go back to our farm today and the wild quail have nearly disappeared. The reason is loss of good quail habitat,” says Jack Odle, The Progressive Farmer Editor-in-chief. “Many of the hedgerows are gone as are the small fields of milo that sustained them.”
The Wild Quail Habitat CD, endorsed by Quail Unlimited, was created to help landowners develop the habitat needed to attract wild quail. The 30-minute Wild Quail CD covers everything you need to know about attracting quail to your property and keeping them there such as where and what to plant for great brooding and nesting cover and escape cover. Odle adds, “Our CD is simple and straight-forward—we tell you what type of plants quail like to eat and those that attract the bugs that they eat. We use a combination of video, charts, graphs and pictures to tell you how to implement these practices on your farm.”
In addition to the training, a short quiz has been incorporated into the end of the Wild Quail Habitat CD that users can take to see how much they’ve learned. After taking the quiz, a certificate can be printed proclaiming users as a graduate of the The Progressive Farmer Wildlife Stewardship Institute.
Senior Vice President of Quail Unlimited, Donnie Buckland, says, “We are pleased to endorse the Wild Quail Habitat Management CD by The Progressive Farmer and the University of Kentucky. It is one of the most comprehensive productions that we have reviewed including everything from life history of the bobwhite to modern day management techniques. We applaud their efforts in making this information available to the public and helping to explain the plight of the bobwhite and the need for continuous habitat management.”
