Brandon "The Kid" Lewis Begins Six-race Stretch With Houston Divisional

With six races remaining in the season's final 60 days, NHRA top alcohol funny car driver Brandon "The Kid" Lewis looks to kick off a strong finish with his first event win at Houston Raceway Park.

(1888PressRelease) September 19, 2006 - The Mac Tools U.S. Nationals are in the rearview mirror now, but Brandon “The Kid” Lewis is anxious to build on his strong qualifying performance in Indianapolis.

Lewis qualified No. 14 in top alcohol funny car at the world’s largest drag racing event with a pass of 5.71 seconds. Now he gets back to racing at the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Division-4 race at Houston Raceway Park this weekend, looking to do more than qualify.

“Momentum is on our side,” the 20-year-old Lewis said. “We had a good run at Indy, and it wasn’t just one good race. It was continued improvement.”

Though he may have to match up with Topeka divisional champion Jonathan Johnson or Steve Harker – who knocked him out in Indianapolis – Lewis hopes to capture his first event win of the season.

“Obviously, the guys at this race aren’t going to make it easy,” Lewis said, “but the team has learned a lot over the last several races. We feel like the right things are in place to make the big passes when we need to.”

This weekend marks the beginning of a long stretch for Lewis – six races in the season’s final 60 days - hoping a strong finish will capture the attention of a major sponsor and possibly a top fuel ride for 2007.

“There is a lot riding on the end of the season,” the driver of the Aluminum Tank & Truck Accessories Monte Carlo said. “A couple big wins and strong finishes could be the start of something big for 2007.”

The South Central division racers will take on Houston Raceway Park beginning Thursday. Top alcohol qualifying is scheduled to start on Friday afternoon.
