March 20, 2008 - Brandon Connell is a strong believer in human rights, and he has been watching China actions from the injustices going on in Burma all the way to the situation with the Tibet crackdown.
"This is rediculous", says Brandon. "If anyone really needs to get a feel for what is happening over there they should go see the newest Rambo movie."
The country of Burma, also known as Myanmar has been governed by a succession of military regimes since 1962. A new generation of military rulers came to power in 1988 following student demonstrations against the lack of civil liberties and poor management of the country's economy. The protests were repressed by the new government, which then declared that it would manage the transition to democracy. Elections were held in 1990, but when ruling authorities lost to the National League for Democracy (NLD), a coalition led by Aung San Suu Kyi, they refused to transfer power to the winners.
Despite the pledges made, proponents of democracy were tracked down and imprisoned. No genuine political dialogue was established between the military junta and the party leaders, whose activities were severely restricted.
It is believed worldwide that China has a strong influance on the Myanmar Government yet no actions have been taken by the Chinese Government to help the human rights situation in Burma.
With the recent situation in Tibet including the Chinese Government crackdown and limiting the press from getting close to the situation in Tibet, Brandon Connell has decided to take this head on and push hard for a boycott of Beijing Olympics.
"I have already contacted a few of the 2008 Olympics corporate sponsors and gave them notice that unless they pulled out of sponsoring such a Government, I would organize a boycott on their products."
