January 20, 2008 - 1 in 5 women is now believed to suffer with emotional illness due to pregnancy or birth. 10,000 women a year are found to suffer with birth trauma each year in the UK
Mothersvoice is here to support these women and their families.
Mothersvoice (
www.mothersvoice.org.uk) was founded in November 2007 when it was felt there was a gap in the provision of care for women suffering with perinatal illness and the health care services. The founders are all ex-sufferers and include a qualified nurse and counsellor, birth trauma therapist and postnatal support worker amongst them.
Our aims are to offer support and information to not only the women affected by this illness but also to their partners and families.
At least 40 women a year commit suicide as a direct result of this illness - leaving their babies without a mother - we aim to raise awareness, support sufferers and their families, reduce stigma and work with health care professionals, the media and supportive voluntary agencies to hopefully reduce this number.
The organisation runs a message board for mutual support, telephone helpline and regularly helps with journalist requests for case studies (Sunday express, NOW, Big issue...)
