October 10, 2007 - DETROIT, MI – The Divine Literary Tour comes to this area Oct. 18-20 to speak to America's pressing cultural needs. The tour will feature two hard-hitting forums critiquing pop culture in black America, an inspiring poetry event, and exciting book signings.
The Divine Literary Tour's unique blend of perspectives seeks to address the brutal racial undertones of American society. From the Jena Six's unfair judicial treatment, to conservative television and radio host Bill O'Reilly's recent condescending comments about black Americans, the authors of The Divine Literary Tour ask honest questions and present real solutions to dealing with race in America. The tour will present the weekend's first workshop, The Contemporary Image of Blacks at 2:40 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Pierce Arrow Suite of the Hyatt Regency, Dearborn. This event focuses on the images of black Americans in popular culture. The tour's signature workshop, Perceptions of Black Americans Through Literature, will be held at 5 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Shrine of the Black Madonna bookstore, 13535 Livernois Avenue.
This workshop chronicles and examines the works by black writers dating from the Harlem Renaissance to present day. How do black writers' works affect perceptions about African Americans? And what are the writers' responsibilities to community?
The tour also will feature activities to showcase the diversity of talent in black America. The tour will hold a spoken word presentation by poet Marc Lacy at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at The Truth Bookstore, Northland Mall. Book signings will be held throughout the weekend as part of the NPHC national convention at the Hyatt Regency, Dearborn. Attending authors: RJ Poet, Monica Anderson, Monica Jones, LaShon Williams, Toschia, Fredrick Williams, and Marc Lacy. Book signings also will be held at the Borders Express at Auburn Hills.
