Birth Of A New Icon: The World’s Largest Giant Observation Wheel, Singapore Flyer, Officially Opens

From the comfort of 28 spacious, air-conditioned Singapore Flyer capsules, visitors can witness history unfold before their very eyes as they admire 360-degree, breath-taking views of Singapore’s dynamic cityscape, and parts of Malaysia and Indonesia.

(1888PressRelease) April 26, 2008 - Singapore - The world’s largest Giant Observation Wheel, the iconic Singapore Flyer, illuminated the burgeoning Marina Bay as it celebrated its Official Opening today.

In the presence of over 1,000 invited guests and members of public, Guest-of-Honour Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong officiated this milestone as he struck a symbolic beat of the drum, which initiated a dazzling laser and fireworks display of the stunning 165-metres tall Singapore Flyer. This visual extravaganza was choreographed to a special composition by local acclaimed musician Iskandar Ismail.

Guests were also treated to a night of non-stop live entertainment, including an open-air festival of power-jam music performances, and a panoramic ride atop the country’s new national icon.

From the comfort of 28 spacious, air-conditioned Singapore Flyer capsules, visitors can witness history unfold before their very eyes as they admire 360-degree, breath-taking views of Singapore’s dynamic cityscape, and parts of Malaysia and Indonesia.

“As the world’s largest Giant Observation Wheel, Singapore Flyer stands for Singapore’s vision to progress into the future on the highest levels,” said Mr Florian Bollen, Chairman, Singapore Flyer Pte Ltd.

The way Singapore Flyer was realised – through the partnership of different parties from Japan, China, Germany, India and the Singapore Government’s support, just to name a few – is “a great example of how the world comes together in this cosmopolitan city to achieve truly outstanding results”, he added.

Several technological breakthroughs were achieved to conceptualise, plan and develop Singapore Flyer for more than five years, at a cost of S$240 million.

About 350 guests were also invited from charities and grassroots organisations Children’s Cancer Foundation, Singapore Children’s Society, PEACE-Connect Neighbourhood Link, Bukit Gombak Senior Citizens Executive Committee and Teck Ghee Community Centre.

As a gesture of appreciation for the warm support shown towards Singapore Flyer, the Singapore Flyer Pte Ltd Board and Management also presented a $28,000 cheque donation for The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund.
