A bird-flu pandemic was vividly portrayed in the made-for-television movie “Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America,” shown on ABC, May 9, 2006. But, how realistic is this movie? According to a Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) internal document dated May 4, 2006 “The film does depict scenarios that could unfold should a severe pandemic ever develop, including limited availability of antivirals and vaccines as well as the potential for disruption of supplies, medicines, and other essential services. The film also illustrates the expected months-long delay in developing an effective vaccine against a pandemic strain of influenza once it emerges.”
But what about the use of quarantines to prevent the spread of the illness, possible resistance to the antiviral drugs Tamiflu and Relenza, the effectiveness of surgical masks, and other important issues? The HHS document contains disinformation that is startling in scope.

Dr. Bradford Frank graduated from the University of Colorado with a B.A. in Chemistry and his M.D. degree. He is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Buffalo, New York. He has a master’s degree in public health (M.P.H.) from Yale, where he specialized in infectious diseases, and a master’s in business administration (M.B.A.) from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
