July 01, 2009 - The selection recognizes Lisa Yamada's commitment to excellence in the field of Education.
Lisa Yamada, a native of Hawaii, earned her AS Degree in Food Service from the University of Hawaii/Maui Community College in 1993, followed by an AA Degree in Liberal Arts 2008, and is currently working on her BA in Elementary Education degree. She has been working and volunteering in her field for almost 17 years.
Right now, Ms. Yamada is attending college full-time to finish her BA in Elementary Education. She is expecting to graduate in May 2010. She says that the classes she is currently taking are helping her pinpoint the areas that she needs to work on more, to become a better teacher in the classroom; working in larger group settings, organizing daily assignments and activities, and creating a safe environment for children with learning disabilities. She also stresses how important it is to keep close communication with parents, community leaders and veteran teachers.
Ms. Yamada is a member of the CHIP program (Coronary Health Improvement Project with the Kahului Seventh Day Adventist Church), is a speaker on behalf of women survivors of domestic violence, has had articles published in local newspapers and has also received numerous certificates for her volunteer work over the past years. Yamada's future goals, in addition to finishing her BA degree, would be to serve in the mission field helping children all over the world.
Ms. Yamada has come a long way. She is a survivor of domestic violence, and has been a single parent for the last seven years. She gives credit to her three children, saying, "My children are the ones who have inspired me to be where I am today. They give me the energy that I need to push myself to reach the goals I am after." She further said that it is her children that are a reminder to her everyday of what she needs to do to make the world a better place. In her spare time, Yamada enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, dancing, playing the guitar and listening to music.
