August 08, 2009 - The selection recognizes Iris M. McGuire's commitment to excellence in the Law Enforcement and Education fields.
Iris M. McGuire, who holds an AA from Marymount College, followed by a BA in History and Political Science from the University of Hawaii, has been working in her community for the past eleven years, for both the local Police Department and the Department of Education.
Having always been fascinated with the law and police work, McGuire made the decision to turn her passion into a full-time career within her local community where she grew up. Beginning almost eleven years ago, she began working as a police officer with the Hawaii County Police Department. For the past six years, she had also taken on the added responsibility of becoming the Kea'au High School Athletic Director, after starting out as a coach with her alma mater, St. Joseph Jr./Sr. High School.
As a police officer, McGuire is currently assigned as a reserve officer, supplementing the Puna patrol division. Working in the school system, she oversees the entire athletic program, including the personnel, finance and discipline aspects of the job. "I grew up in this community and saw the need for more youth activities," McGuire said in response to working in the school system. "I enjoy working in the community with our youth and hoping to make a difference." She added that playing athletics in high school gave her many opportunities that she could share with others.
Ms. McGuire is a certified athletic administrator and is also currently pursuing her Certified Masters in Athletic Administration. She is a member of the Athletic Directors and Coaches Association and the National Scholastic Athletic Association and is the commissioner for the Department of Liquor Control for the County of Hawaii. McGuire has won the 2000 Puna Police Officer of the Year Award and the 2001 Hawaii Police Officer of the Year Award. McGuire confesses that she doesn't feel that she is an expert on any one particular thing, but adds, "My success is based on having a solid support system as well as the willingness to work hard."
