August 28, 2009 - The selection recognizes Brenda Joyce Fortes's commitment to excellence in the field of Education.
Earning her Bachelor's Degree in English Literature in 1972 and Master's in Education in 1998, both from Eastern University, Fortes is a 19-year veteran of education. She has established herself as a leader in her field, in Boyertown Area School District and in various institutions of higher education. She specializes in teaching language arts and acts as a senior high school language arts teacher. She also serves on the school’s co-teaching program and drafting the Reading Remediation Program.
Currently, Fortes is the high school's designated English writing instructor for the new Dual Enrollment English Writing course, in cooperation with Montgomery County Community College. In addition to being on the high school's Character Committee, Fortes is responsible for writing and regularly updating the academic integrity initiative statement for the school and district. She also serves with the curriculum writing team as they rewrite the Senior High School Reading and Language Arts Program of Studies.
Previously, Fortes lent her talents to Montgomery County Community College as an adjunct English faculty and conducted higher education writing courses. She also served on their President’s Advisory Council for Diversity.
Fortes finds deep personal fulfillment in helping students feel validated as human beings and giving them hope for a bright future. She attributes her success to her love for children, manifested in teaching them the intricate connection of learning with understanding and respect for the basic human dignity of each person as the path to individual and world peace.
Fortes is a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She was nominated for the Disney America's Teacher Award in 2002.
