July 15, 2009 - SALT LAKE CITY – Bikes for Kids Utah, a non-profit 501(C)3 organization that annually provides 1,000 new bicycles to underprivileged Utah children, today announced details of the second annual Red vs. Blue Time Trial, presented by Intermountain Financial Group, and the Bikes for Kids Utah Dinner Auction, the second set of fundraising events for the organization this year.
“We saw a significant increase in cycling participants at our May 30 fundraising rides and we are looking forward to increased participation in the time trial and dinner auction events as well,” said Debbie Reid, founder and director of Bikes for Kids Utah. “Holding the two events a few days apart will create a week of Bikes for Kids enthusiasm and provide the opportunity to honor the U of U and BYU time trial champions.”
Red vs. Blue Time Trial
The Red vs. Blue Time Trial will gather the cycling clubs, alumni and fans of Brigham Young University and the University of Utah to raise money and awareness for Bikes for Kids Utah. The event is scheduled for Saturday August 29 beginning at 9 a.m.
Cyclists of all ages, abilities and genders are encouraged to ride in the individual time trial. Participants will be able to register and race for their favorite school and their time will be used to determine the school “team” with the fastest average time.
The Intermountain Financial Group Cup, a $1,000 cash prize, provided by Intermountain Financial Group (a member of the MassMutual Financial Group), will be awarded to the club with the fastest average speed of official club members from the Y and University of Utah cycling clubs to help in their future racing efforts. Prizes for the top three in five age categories, for both men and women, will be awarded as well.
“The Red vs. Blue Time Trial is a great opportunity for cycling fans to help Bikes for Kids Utah and promote some healthy school rivalry,” said Dylan Pratt, president of the Y Cycling Club. “Fellow Cougars, come help us raise money for a very worthy cause and help us win The Cup away from the U.”
“Bikes for Kids Utah promotes a great image for cycling in Salt Lake,” said Joel Hsia, University of Utah cycling team president. “It’s especially important to help grow cycling as a sport among Utah’s children. We had a great time riding in May’s metric century and we look forward to supporting Bikes for Kids again alongside our fellow Utes defending our Cup title.”
Beginning at the LDS Chapel at 272 E. Traverse Point Dr. in Draper, Utah traveling up Traverse Ridge Road and finishing at the intersection of Traverse Ridge Road and Deer Ridge Drive, the three-mile time trial course has an elevation gain of more than 1,300 feet with 10 percent to 12 percent grades in some locations.
Entry fee to participate in the Red vs. Blue Time Trial is $25, which is tax-deductible.
Bikes for Kids Dinner Auction
