July 28, 2006 - In response to the macroeconomic crisis of the late 1980s, a comprehensive programme of liberalisation, privatisation, and globalisation was initiated in India in July 1991. This was aimed at rapid and substantial economic growth preparing India for integration with the global economy. The programme of economic reforms encompassed wide-ranging reform measures touching almost every aspect of the Indian economy.
The economy of India has more than doubled in real terms since reforms that began in 1991. The foreign exchange reserves have reached a level of over US$ 143 billion in December, 2005.
A Goldman Sachs report ('Dreaming with BRICs: The Path to 2050') states that among Brazil, Russia, India and China, India will grow the fastest over the next 30 to 50 years by leveraging its demographic advantages and through continued development. The World Bank upgraded India's status from a moderately indebted country to a less indebted country in 1999.
These phenomenal developments in the economy have been tracked and presented in the Indiastat e-Year Book 2006. The Year Book traces the journey of economic reforms through statistical data at the national level for the post reform period and reveals what India has accomplished so far.

General Information about "Indiastat e-Year Book 2006" :
To begin with, the book gives an introduction of the general set up of the economy giving the geographical and administrative structure. It brings out results of the Census 1991 and 2001. The census results on the state wise geographical area and the number of States, UTs, Districts, Tehsils/Sub-Districts, Community Development Blocks, Towns and Villages in India have been listed. A number of new districts have been created in India during 1991-2001. An entire state wise listing of the new districts added to each state is available in the tables. The highest government officials of India since 1991 have been named with their tenures.
